Similar to other developed countries, New Zealand's unemployment rate
deteriorated in 2008, rising from only 3.2 percent at the end of 2007 to 4.3 percent at the end of 2008.
However, certain parts of the country are experiencing higher levels of unemployment than others.
The highest average rate of unemployment for the December 2008
quarter was recorded in the Napier district (7.9%) followed by Whangarei (6.7%). The lowest rates of unemployment was
recorded in the district of Invercargill (2.8%) followed by Dunedin (3.0%) . The
strong performance of dairy farming and oil exploration industries contributed towards the low level of unemployment
in Invercargill.
Amongst the main cities, Auckland had the highest average rate (5.5%) of
unemployment for the December 2008 quarter, increasing from 3.8% in the December 2008 quarter. Unemployment in Wellington
decreased from 2.7% to 3.5% over the same period.
The largest increase in unemployment rates was recorded in Whangarei, up
from 2.7% to 6.7%.
NZ labour market by industry
Private households employing staff experienced th strongest decrease in
the number of employed workers, falling 42% year on year followed by other mining (-29%) and other transport (-26%). The
strongest increase in employment was in the electricity and gas supply industry (32%) and sport and
recreation (28%).
